VSAT: How it works
Overview
When you install an Orion Vsat from Remington your Internet “dial tone” comes from the Orion hub in Perth, WA. You are permanently connected to the Internet at a fixed rate depending on your plan.
Neither Orion nor Remington provide domain and/or email hosting services. Since you are connected to the Internet in Australia it does not make sense to maintain an account with an ISP with servers in Papua New Guinea to host your domain or email accounts as receiving emails will incur additional costs and all traffic will need to connect back into the PNG ISP from Australia. The PNG ISP will charge you for downloading of emails per MB.
 Our preferred domain and email hosting partner is PNGconnect with servers located in a world class data centre in Sydney/Australia. The services of PNGconnect are specifically targeted at VSat clients.
PNGconnect hosting fees are highly competitive. PNGconnect has competent staff located in both Port Moresby and Australia to maintain their servers to the latest standards and updates.
Signing up with PNGconnect
Q: Does PNGconnect provide Internet services?
A: PNGconnect is NOT an Internet service provider. They provide domain and email hosting most appropriate for your needs.
Q: I want to sign up and redelegate my domain to PNGconnect but my ISP tells me that I won't be able to send and receive emails.
A: Not true! You will experience no interruptions in getting your emails as we will setup your email accounts exactly the same way as they are now. The only thing you change is your POP3 (incoming mail server) and SMTP (outgoing mail server) settings.
Q: Can you host domain names like www.yourdomain.com.pg?
A: We can host any country specific domain, such as pg, .com, .net, .org, .com.au, .uk, .us, .de, .ch, .cn, .cx, .it, .mx, .ph, .id, .sg, .sk, or any other valid top level domains.
PNGconnect can assist you with registration of standard (.com, .org , etc) and .pg domains. Other Country domain registration is normally done via your local country's registrar. For other countries, once registered, set your DNS details to our DNS servers and you will be in business.
Q: With your servers located in Sydney will it take longer to download my emails or load my website?
A: When you are connected to Vsat you will find that you can download your emails and access your website much faster than ever before if it is hosted in Australia!
Q: How is my account managed?
A: With PNGconnect you can have two options. Either PNGconnect manages your account or give you access to your own control panel from where you can manage each and every aspect of your account yourself. That includes FTP access, email account setup, database setup and much more!
Q: Are the servers safe and secure?
A: The PNGconnect servers are located in a world class data centre in Sydney and are managed by professionals around the clock to the highest industry standards. Everything is backed up daily.
How do I transfer my site from another host?
The procedure to transfer a live site from another host depends on the complexity of your site. There are several things that PNGconnect provide to make your transition easier. Please review the following steps to use as a guideline.
- Sign up for an account with PNGconnect. (Add hyperlink to signup page)
- Upload the content of your site to our FTP
- PNGconnect will create any relevant database that your site may need
- PNGconnect will create the email addresses required
- Test your site using the Instant Alias that PNGconnect provides
- Once everything is good, you may delegate your domain to PNGconnect DNS servers
If you have a live website with MySQL or other types of database, you may need to stop any updates to the database on the old site to prevent any discrepancies in the data.
Transfer Help
If your site has a significant amount of data to be transferred, we may be able to help you perform direct server to server transfer from your old host. Please send an email with the information about your old account's login information and your new account name with us. We will perform FTP download from your old server using the information provided.

Email
During the DNS transition period, some of your emails may still go to your old host. You need to keep the account open and still check it using your old host's mail server's IP address or generic mail server name. The best way to do this is to set up a separate account on your email program:
- Using the mail.domain.com - this will work for your PNGconnect account once it's transferred.
- Using the old host's mail server's IP address or mail server name - this will continue to pick up mails that still go to the old host
Alternatively, you can also set up the emails at your old host to be forwarded to another address that isn't involved in the move. This is perhaps the easiest way to not lose emails during transfer.
The Instant Alias
PNGconnect provides an Instant Alias URL for each of your domains so you can directly access your new site without having to perform the DNS changes.
Use this for testing purposes only. Don't use it as a permanent link as the Instant Alias will change if it ever needs to be turned off/on.
